Different Type of Stitches in Crocheting

Before starting stitches we should know what is yarn over? Because we will come across this word often in making other stitches like Half double crochet, Double Crochet, triple crochet /treble crochet.

Yarn Over

Wrap the yarn from back to front over the hook or hold the yarn still in the hook. This movement  of the yarn over the hook is used over and over again in crochet and is usually called "yarn over".

Basic stitches of crochet

Single Crochet Stitch

Let’s look how to make the Single Crochet. As the above instruction make some basic chain to start.

1. Insert the hook into


2. the second chain from hook on the starting chain draw yarn through the same stitch.


3. Yarn over again and pull the yarn through both loops on the hook.


4. One Single crochet  made.Insert hook into next stitch; repeat the same through all the stitches.


5. After completing the first row, for second row you have turn the work by making one chain.


6. Insert the hook through the loop of second single crochet stitch of the first row and repeat the 1,2 & 3

Half Double Crochet Stitch

Let’s look how to make the Half Double crochet. First make some basic chain to start (may be 12 chains)

1. For half double crochet make one yarn over


2. Insert the hook into the third chain from hook and draw yarn through the same stitch.


3. Now we can see that hook holds three loops.


4. Next yarn over again and pull the yarn through all the three loops on the hook.


5. Thus a half double crochet stitch is made. Height of stitch increases than single crochet.


6. Insert hook into next stitch; repeat the same through all the stitches.


7. After completing the first row, for second row you have turn the work by making two chain.


8. Insert the hook through the loop of second half double crochet stitch of the first row  with one yarn over. Draw yarn through the same stitch.


9. Repeat 3 and 4 through all stitches.

Double Crochet Stitch

Let’s look how to make the Double crochet. First make some basic chain to start (may be 12 chains)

1. For  Double crochet make one yarn over


2. Insert the hook into the third chain from hook and draw yarn through the same stitch.

4. Next yarn over again and pull the yarn through first two loops on the hook and now we see two more loops in the hook.


5. Again yarn over and pull the yarn through last two loops.

Triple/Treble Crochet Stitch :

Let’s look how to make the Triple crochet. First make some basic chain to start (may be 12 chains)

1. For  Triple crochet make two yarn over.


2. Insert the hook into the fifth chain from hook and draw yarn through the same stitch.


3. Now we can see that hook holds four loops.


4. Next yarn over again and pull the yarn through first two loops on the hook and now we see three more loops in the hook.


5. Again yarn over and pull the yarn through next  two loops.


6. Again yarn over and pull the yarn through last two loops.


7. Thus a double crochet stitch is made. Height of stitch increases than half double crochet.


8. Insert hook into next stitch;repeat the same through all the stitches.


9. After completing the first row, for second row you have turn the work by making four chain.


10. Insert the hook through the loop of second  triple crochet stitch of the first row  with two yarn over. Draw yarn through the same stitch.


11. Repeat 3, 4 , 5 and 6 through all stitches.
